National Road Safety Month Inaugurated by Ministry of Road Transport and Highways

Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari inaugurated National Road Safety Month for 18 January to 17 February 2021. It will be observed to raise awareness about road safety and government’s commitment towards safety. Minister said there is a need to save lives as about 415 people die every day in the country due to road accidents.  Launch of a film on road safety, flagging off of a National Championship Safe Speed Challenge from Wagah border to Kanyakumari, and giving away of awards for road safety are the activities to be performed during this month.

Biswajeet Chatterjee Announced ‘Indian Personality of the Year’ and IFFI

Veteran actor, director and singer Biswajeet Chatterjee announced ‘Indian Personality of the Year’ at 51st edition of International Film Festival of India. The actor will be given the award in March. Chatterjee is known for his films like ‘Bees Saal Baad’, ‘April Fool’ and ‘Night in London’.

PM Laid Foundation Stone for Surat Metro Project and Phase II of Ahmedabad Metro

Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stone for Surat Metro Project and Phase II of Ahmedabad Metro Project in a virtual event on 18 January 2021. Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) will implement these projects.

Inauguration of Khelo India State Centre of Excellence  

Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports person Kiren Rijiju launched the Khelo India State Centre of Excellence (KISCE). The programme launched at the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex at Mhalunge-Balewadi in Pune on Monday.

This is the 9th KISCE formally inaugurated by the Union Minister so far and the Maharashtra-based sports complex will focus on three Priority Olympic disciplines – Shooting, Athletics and Cycling.

The State of Tamil Nadu Celebrates Thiruvalluvar Day

The state of Tamil Nadu celebrates Thiruvalluvar Day during Pongal celebrations. Every year, people of Tamil Nadu celebrates this day on the second day of Tamil month called ‘thai’. Thiruvalluvar is a Tamil poet and is popular as the author of Thirukkural. It is a collection of couplets on political and economic matters including ethics and love.

Apart from Thirukkural, he has also written ‘Gnana Vettiyan’ and ‘Pancharathnam’. These books also contribute to Tamil science, siddha medicines and literature. Kanyakumari has a tall statue of Thiruvalluvar. Moreover, the height of the statue has its significance. The legend who wrote Thirukkural has 1330 couplets and he divided these couplets into 133 sections. Thus, the height of the statue of Thiruvalluvar is 133 foot.

Ramchandra Guha’s latest book ‘The Commonwealth of Cricket’ would be launching virtually in the Tata Literature Live (The Mumbai Lit fest) this month. His latest book depicts his life with his abiding love for the game.  Moreover, the book, ‘The commonwealth of cricket: The subtlest and sophisticated game known to mankind’, has author’s personal account of being intimately involved with the game. The book also includes all the events starting from the time he was a child growing up in Dehradun to his days in college. The author also pens down his encounters with the best Indian and foreign cricket players to becoming part of the BCCI.

President-elect Joe Biden plans to unveil an immigration bill on first day of his administration. In the bill he will provide an eight-year path to citizenship for an estimated 11 million people living in the US. Hence, this is a massive reversal from the Trump administration’s harsh immigration policies.

US and China Clash at WHO Over Scientific Mission in Wuhan

On Monday the United States called on China to allow an expert team from the World Health Organization (WHO) to interview some people. These few people include care-givers, former patients and lab workers of the central city of Wuhan. They also ensure their access to medical data and samples.

However, a team of WHO-led independent experts was already arrived in China trying to determine the origins of the new coronavirus. WHO experts are holding teleconferences with Chinese counterparts during their two-week quarantine before starting work on the ground.
