Pey Jal Survekshana: Government Launches Scheme for Drinking Water in 10 Cities

Government has launched a project to survey the drinking water condition, waste-water management and water bodies in 10 cities. Newly announced Jal Jeevan Mission-Urban (JJM-U) by Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry will be later conducted in 500 cities. As per a statement, survey will collect data on equitable distribution of water, reuse of waste water and also mapping of water bodies with respect to quantity and quality through a challenge process.

National Informatics Centre Launches Instant Messaging App Sandes

National Informatics Centre has launched an instant messaging application named Sandes. With this platform users can have all kinds of communications with an email ID or mobile number. The new messaging platform does not allow users to change registered mobile number or email ID. It was initially released for government employees but now it is available for use for common people as well. The app is a step towards government’s strategy to build an ecosystem of India-made software.

Fossils of 550 Million Years Old Animal Dickinsonia Found in Bhimbetka

A team of researchers has discovered fossils of earliest known animal Dickinsonia dated back to 550 million years ago. Fossils are found near Bhimbetka Rock Shelters about 40 km from Bhopal, the capital city of Madhya Pradesh. According to the report published in Gondwana Research journal, researchers have found three fossils, out of which one is 17 inches long and two are smaller.

Historian and Author Christopher Lee dies

On February 17, historian and author Christopher Lee passed away after contracting coronavirus at his home in Sussex. He was 79 years old when he took his last breath. On BBC Radio 4, Christopher had won acclaim for the BBC’s This Sceptred Isle.

Across a six-decade career, he also worked abroad as a defence and foreign affairs correspondent. Moreover, he wrote books on topics including the royal family, British society and culture throughout history.

Sundararaj Theodore Baskaran Wins Sanctuary Lifetime Service Award 2020

Sundararaj Theodore Baskaran is a writer, historian, naturalist, and activist. He has won the Sanctuary Lifetime Service Award for his writing prowess in English and Tamil in the year 2020. The Sanctuary Nature Foundation instituted the award.  Moreover, his writing has contributed towards the conservation discourse.

He was also chosen for the award in the backdrop of inspiring the young naturalists. Some of his books in English language are- Dance of the Sarus: Essays of a Wandering Naturalist, Book of Indian Dogs, and A Day with the Shama: Essays on Nature.
