Government of India Increases Fertilizer Subsidy by 140%

The Government of India has increased fertilizer subsidies to Rs 1,200 per bag from May 19, 2021. However, earlier it was Rs 500 per bag. Thus, the government has now increased the subsidies by 140%. Moreover, the prices of fertilizers in the country are increasing at a faster rate. The reason for this is because prices of ammonia, phosphoric acid, etc. are increasing internationally. Consequently, Indian government was spending Rs 80,000 crores for chemical subsidies. Now, with the increase in subsidy, it will spend an additional Rs 14,775 crores.

India set up its first Agriculture Export Facilitation Centre in Pune

Arjan Bhullar, a first Indian fighter to become MMA World Champion

On May 16, 2021, Arjan ‘Singh’ Bhullar became the first Indian fighter to win the ONE Heavyweight World Title at the top-level (Mixed Martial Arts) MMA Championship event in Singapore. He won the title after defeating the longtime heavyweight king Brandon ‘The Truth’ Vera.

Moreover, Asia’s largest global sports event i.e. ONE Championship witnessed ONE Super Series debut of a Thai striking phenom. It also witnessed four mixed martial arts contests and a battle for the ONE Heavyweight World Title. Bhullar ended the five-year championship-winning run of the Filipino-American fighter Brandon Vera in the main event. However, in the first round, he stifled Vera and took him down and in the second round he saw Vera gasping for air.

Penpa Tsering, a former speaker of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile has been elected as the President of the Central Tibetan Administration. The officials informed media about this on May 14, 2021. Consequently, Wangdu Tsering Pesur who was the Chief Election Commissioner of the Tibetan government-in-exile give information regarding this. However, via online conference he informed that Penpa Tsering was successfully able to secure 34,324 votes for the post of ‘Sikyong’ (President) of the 17th Parliament-in-Exile of the Central Tibetan Administration.

US Government Pledges to Globally Share 80 Million COVID-19 Vaccines

On May 17, 2021, the US President Joe Biden announced that the country will share 80 million vaccine doses globally over the next six weeks. However, this amount of vaccines shared by US is five-time more than any other country has shared to date.  During his address, US President Joe Biden also stated that the states government is taking an additional step to help the world. Moreover, he added that the US will never be fully safe until the pandemic is under control. Therefore, the Government has decided that over the next 6 weeks, the country will be sending 80 million vaccine doses overseas.
