CBSE Class 12 Board Exams 2021 are Cancelled: How will it Impact the Future of Students?

Amid the ongoing second wave of pandemic, board exams were really a subject of concern among students and their parents. There was a lot of confusion regarding the CBSE class 12 board exams among the students. From time to time CBSE has been announcing decisions regarding the board exams 2021 whether it was of class 10th or 12th. The board had already cancelled the class 10th board exams but a final confirmation was awaited for class 12th exams since the exams were postponed. Expert panels, state and central governments hold different rounds of talks to come to a decision as intermediate exams play an important role in future of students. Finally, on 1st June 2021, CBSE announced in its official statement that the board has decided to cancel the examination of class 12 for this year. The board also stated that it will assess the results based on well-defined objective criteria.

On June 1, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a review meeting regarding CBSE class 12 board exams. Moreover, Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar and Union Minister of Finance Nirmala Sitharaman were also part of the meeting among other board members and experts. In the meeting, they decided to cancel it in view of the safety of children in these uncertain conditions due to COVID-19. The Prime Minister also said that the decision of cancellation of CBSE class 12 board exams 2021 has been taken in the interest of students. How CBSE Will Evaluate the Result of Class 12?

After hearing the cancellation news of CBSE class 12 board exams, everyone is wondering that how the CBSE will evaluate the marks of the students. People are also thinking that it might be possible that the CBSE board will calculate the marks in a similar way of assessment of class X results. But in the meeting conducted by Narendra Modi, it has been decided that CBSE will take steps to compile the results of class 12th students’ as per a well-defined objective criteria’ in a time-bound manner.

The CBSE will set up a committee to decide the alternative scheme for tabulation of results. Consequently, the performance of students in internal school assessment will play a crucial part in the scheme. However, a special option is available for the students who will not satisfy with the assessment. They will have a choice to appear in the exams when the situation will become favorable.

What is the Reason Behind the Cancellation of CBSE Class 12 Board Exams 2021?

As the major part of the world is suffering from a cruel viral infection, the conditions in India deteriorated during the second wave of Coronavirus. Daily numbers of infected cases in India is still a huge concern. Moreover, medical researchers have predicted the arrival of third wave of Covid-19. There are predictions that the third wave might be even more dangerous as it may mostly infect the children. So in situation like this conducting of CBSE class 12 board exams will not be a wise move. Even Prime Minister stressed that the health and safety of students are of utmost importance and the government will not compromise on this aspect. He also stated that in today’s time, such exams cannot be the reason to put our youth at risk.

COVID-19 has affected the academic calendar and the issue of board exams has been causing immense anxiety among students, parents and teachers. This continuous state of uncertainty and worry about their future might also affect the mental health of children.  Therefore, to put all this insecurity to an end, the decision regarding cancellation of board exams has been taken. The situation because of COVID-19 is dynamic across the country.  In some states the number of cases is coming down while some states have still opted for a lockdown. So, conducting class 12th exams would have been a threat for the safety of students in situation like this.

Reaction of Students:

Since the announcement on Tuesday evening, the students mostly are welcoming the decision. The social media also got flooded with hilarious memes. The news has come as a relief for over 14 lakh students who had registered to appear for the CBSE class 12 board exams. Most students are happy as they are not mentally prepared to take exam in this pandemic situation. Even the parents of such children were not in the favor of commencement of board exams considering the health risk of their children.

But some students are not happy with the cancellation of the examinations. They think that instead of cancelling the exams government should have focused on the vaccination of students. Many people were of the view to get the students vaccinated, and then organize the exams. This way all the preparation of the previous year would have paid off. Few students are also tensing over tabulation criterion suggested by the board. Although some students are trusting the board and they believe that CBSE will soon come up with a well defined objective criterion in the interest of students all across India.

CBSE Board Exams 2021 of class 12 Cancelled

On Tuesday, following the cancellation of the CBSE board examination 2021, the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) has also scrapped its ISC examination for class XII. The Chief Executive of CISCE told that the class 12 students will now be evaluated through an alternative scheme. However, the details of evaluation process will soon to be worked out and once it gets prepared it will be available on the official website of CISCE. 

Shortly after the announcement, Education Minister of Haryana said that his state would follow the government’s decision on CBSE. Also, Uttarakhand Education Minister said a decision would be taken soon regarding the state board exams but according to some sources the state board examination will most likely be cancelled. Other state boards like Maharashtra board and Rajasthan board said they would decide the fate of their class 12 board examinations in the next few days. However, UP board has cancelled the class 10th exams due the critical condition of Covid and increasing cases of black fungus. But the board has postponed the class 12th exams and further decision will be taken soon.

How Decision of Cancelling Class 12 Exams will Affect the Future of Students?

Considering the current situation, cancelling of CBSE class XII exams might seem the needful. However, in the prevalent Indian education system, class 12 exams are crucial in defining the road to the future. Students get admissions for higher education based on their class XII results. In many prestigious institutions and universities, merit lists for admissions are prepared as per the class 12 exam results. As these exams stand cancelled this year, students will definitely be concerned about their higher education. Will the assessment by CBSE be accepted by colleges and universities for admissions in their campuses? Or will students have to go some new evaluations to get admissions in their preferred institutions? These questions are still needed to be attended.

Conclusion:

This decision of cancelling exams taken by the government got mixed reactions from the citizens. However, the government had informed the Supreme Court will hear the plea seeking the exam’s cancellation. The Supreme Court will give the final decision by June 3. But considering the current situation it is quite clear that SC will give the verdict in the favor of government decision.
