The book got instant success when it was published and become a classic of modern American literature. The book also won the Pulitzer Prize and was widely read in high schools and middle schools in the United States. ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ is a coming-of-age story, an anti-racist novel, a historical drama.

Summary of the book ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’:

The story sets during the time of the Great Depression and it is a sublime example of the Southern writing tradition. The story revolves around a family of three members- the narrator of the story Scout, her brother Jeremy and their widowed father Atticus.  Judge Taylor appointed Atticus to defend Tom Robinson, a black man who has been accused of raping a young white woman. Through the young eyes of Scout and Jem Finch, the explores with exuberant humor. The book also discusses the irrationality of adult attitudes to race and class in the Deep South of the 1930s. The conscience of a town steeped in prejudice, violence and hypocrisy, this story narrates the struggle of a man for justice.

About the author of the book:

Harper Lee (April 28, 1926 – February 19, 2016) was an American novelist who was best known for her 1960 novel ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’.  Lee published only two books, yet she got the Presidential Medal of Freedom award in 2007 for her contribution to literature. She also had numerous honorary degrees and assisted her close friend in his research for the book ‘In Cold Blood’ (1966).
